Vegetable garden at the Kazaure site strengthens workers’ nutrition and supports neighbouring communities.
At the Kazaure site, part of the construction of the Kano–Maradi railway line, a vegetable garden was created with the initial goal of providing a leisure activity for employees living in the camp site.
As the project evolved, the initiative also proved to be a practical way to improve workers’ diets: the harvests are used in meal preparation, and any surplus is shared with the local community.
Managed by the Environmental Team, the garden includes several crops, namely onion, cabbage, cucumber, lettuce, carrot, pepper, eggplant, and melon. The first harvests took place in early 2025, and since then, part of the production has been incorporated into the meals served at the site, contributing to fresher and more diverse nutrition.
Between January and April 2025, part of the production was distributed to Mota-Engil employees, workers from subcontracted companies involved in the project, and to neighbouring communities including Shagari Quarters, Kanti, Ganguli, Katoge, Tsohon Kafi, and Cikin Gari.
This initiative demonstrates how a space originally designed for leisure can generate practical and environmental benefits, promoting employee well-being, healthy eating, and closer relationships with surrounding communities.
